Illustration - evaluation

Illustration unit

For the illustration unit we were asked to produce two final illustrations from two different parts of the book "1984". As we started I found myself enjoying the creation aspect, the quick sketches from ideas to colour pieces all while trying different illustrator techniques and styles, a part that I found more enjoyable as well as difficult.

The illustrators we looked at in class where Joe Sacco, Geoft Grandfield and Edward Ardizzone. After we where done experimenting with styles and techniques we where asked to come up with five ideas to refine to the final two which would both be in the same style.

For the first of the five I chose the scene from the beginning where the main character (Winston) is entering his apartment building (Victory mansion), the second the realisation that everyone is being controlled by the government (Big Brother) the third is his and love interest (Julia) meet up in the forest, forth a sense of comfort while a women sing while doing the laundry. and the last is Winston being taking to the terrifying room 101.

I chose to draw the illustration by hand and finish them on the computer digitally.

For the final two I chose to do the first and the fifth as they are important parts and yet not a lot of visual detail about them allowing me to come up with it myself.

All in all for this unit I found myself looking at illustration like it was the first time again from the creative side of it. I believe I did well to make the finals in the same style using similar brushes in photoshop to get the similar effect. If I where to do this again I would maybe try printing the images out bigger to see the effect and focus of displaying important details.
